on the campaign trail, erick, paul ryan, the republican vice presidential nominee, he's making some serious accusations against joe biden. but joe biden is responding. listen to what joe biden said today. >> for the previous eight years all the policies that congressman ryan voted for and governor romney said he supported, all those policies in a mere eight years, they doubled the national debt. they doubled the national debt from what they inherited in 2001. >> he's right on that because the debt was about $5 trillion when president bush took office, more than $10 trillion when he left office. i think he's referring to the two tax cuts that weren't paid for, the precipitation drug benefits that weren't paid for, two wars, iraq and afghanistan that weren't paid for that caused so much, at least 80% or 90% of that debt. >> well, you know, i actually don't think the wars caused added as much, but a lot of stuff did. here's a fact as well, yes, president bush left office with a double national debt. here's another fact the democrats don't like. president obama has added more to the national de

. this claim by the republicans, i give it to pinocchios. obama will claim that are ryan's plan for medicare will for seniors to pay $6,400 more a year to make up for cuts in the program. this is an old democratic attack that has been around for a while. the problem is it is based on an earlier version of ryan's plan. that is another thing i have given two pinocchios. people should always be aware of dire predictions far off in the future. the $6,400 figure refers to an analysis of cbo estimates of a different, less generous ryan plan that goes to the year 2022. they make no estimates of the new version, except to say that beneficiaries might face higher costs. the plan was changed in other ways too. it changed the option of traditional medicare. it also decided to set the feature growth rate for medicare to the same matter accused by obama in his budget so there would not be a difference there. a study published recently by a journal of the american medical association suggests the average cost to additional medicare would be on the $800 more a year in the ryan plan if it had been in place

and paul ryan's campaign which was thought focused on the jobs and economy has been forced into a broadened portfolio to include foreign policy and international affairs. it turned out to be fortuitous. there was a lot of speculation that mitt romney's relative inexperience one-term governor of massachusetts up against a commander-in-chief that claimed to kill bin laden would be a real liability. we've seen in recent weeks mr. romney has been able to get on offense. he was criticized for his early statements suggesting that the cairo embassy remarks attacks on benghazi were inappropriate. when you look at the subsequent list of alleged gaffs, misstatements and inappropriate rhetoric the president has been accused of even suggesting egypt isn't an ally made it possible for mr. romney to take more offensive approach on foreign policy and go up against the president to suggest he has not been a strong leader. bill: carl we'll be back to you in a moment. as soon as we see governor romney we'll bring our viewers to that event. meanwhile another one in new york and martha has that. martha: big da

candidate paul ryan is in new hampshire. this is not a live picture, but him at the event from this morning. despite the small size, new hampshire has become a key battle ground state. ryan was there just last week. the latest polls show the president ahead of mitt romney in nine battle ground states. mr. obama's biggest leads are in ohio, new hampshire, and iowa. of course, this could change in the weeks to come. the tightest races at this point are nevada and north carolina. the national average of those polled has president obama with a 49.5%, the potential vote 44% for romney. >>>in this weekend's presidential address president obama is calling on congress to help homeowners. >> last week mortgage rates were at historic lows. but instead of helping more and more hard working families take advantage of those rates. congress was away on break. instead of worrying about you they had already gone home to worry about their campaigns. >> the president says congress has yet to act on legislation he sent them in february that would save homeowners about $3000 a year on their mortgages. >>> the
